It’s not that long ago that applications were all stored on mainframes: there was a single computing facility and employees would access this to get their information.
This was slow and cumbersome (and expensive) so there was a drive applications from the mainframe onto distributed systems. There were many reasons for doing so: costs savings in hardware, software and datacentre facilities as well as the promise of greater agility.
