Typical Circumstances and Challenges
  • 6-12 months of operational experience with virtualization.
  • Migrating applications that are not mission critical in nature and/or have less stringent performance need.
  • Realization of the need for tools to simplify trouble shooting of complex performance problems (e.g., Storage Performance, CPU Ready etc).
  • Recognition of the need for a solution to simplify the presentation of metrics to application owners to assist them in eliminating virtualization as the cause of application performance problems.
  • 12 months & beyond.
  • Over provisioning server and storage resources is no longer deemed an acceptable solution for managing capacity in the virtual environment. Conversely, the organization does not want to suffer from shortfalls in capacity which can increase the lead time associated with delivering new VMs.
  • Acknowledgment of the need for a more deterministic approach to planning capacity to meet existing & future workload requirements v adhoc reporting and guesswork. Awareness that there are potential cost savings from the recovery of wasted resources caused by dormant VMs, dormant files and VMs with oversized configurations.
  • Supporting Mission Critical Applications without adopting strategies to reserve physical resources which are dedicated to meet peak performance requirements (over provisioning)

As with Enterprise Operations Manager, plus:

  • Multiple Virtual environments and/or private clouds deployed and acknowledgment of the need to manage performance from a single holistic environment.
  • Need to apply different analysis and automation policies to different parts of the infrastructure.
  • Scale to 1000's of virtual machines
  • Mature service management processes & acknowledgment of the need to integrate toolsets to drive greater operational efficiency
  • Presence of other management tools providing customer and business portals, asset management, change control, orchestration etc.
  • Need to deliver performance information in a secure way to internal or external customers
Virtual Infrastructure Management Requirements
  • Real time bottleneck detection & reporting for key resources such as CPU, Memory, Ballooning, Swapping, CPU Ready, IOPS, Disc Space..
  • Understand which VMs maybe impacted by bottlenecks
  • Understand which VMs are resource hogs and impacting other VMs that are sharing physical host and storage resources
  • Historical reporting for presentation of key resources to application owners
  • "What if" planning to determine the impact and capacity management actions required to support changes (eg adding VMs, moving VMs to other clusters, consolidating clusters, changing hardware etc...)
  • Trend analysis to determine the future impact on capacity, based on historical growth
  • Historical reporting to share key metrics with stakeholders such as line management and application
  • Identify under and over provisioned VMs by analysing peak resource utilization so that their configurations can be Rightsized.
  • Identify VMs which are not in use and can be decommissioned
  • Identify files that can be removed because they are no longer associated with VMs in service
  • Ability to detect other types of files which may also be consuming resources unnecessarily (eg SNAP shots + identify Log Files)
  • Smart consolidation of mission critical & non-mission critical workloads
  • Efficient workload packing on ESX & Datastores
  • Real-time control vs. static allocation

As with Enterprise Operations Manager, plus:

  • A unified management solution to support multiple virtual & cloud environments from a single appliance, from a single pane of glass
  • Ability to support multiple hypervisors
  • Granular grouping capabilities to enable different visualization, analysis & automation policies to be applied to different parts of the infrastructure
  • Ability to implement custom policies, reflecting the business and technical needs for automation, security, compliance, change control etc
  • Scalability to 10,000+ VMs from a single appliance
  • REST API exposing all UI functions to enable extensive integration to 3rd party management platforms to streamline workflow associated with system provisioning, operational processes and visualization.
  • Roles-based users access with controls to scope of what can be visualized by each user of the system, with the capability to integrate with corporate Active Directory
  • Re-branding
