Tutorial: Upgrading the VMTurbo Appliance

Why would I want to update the VMTurbo appliance?

There are two primary reasons:

  1. When you downloaded the VMTurbo appliance (its same appliance for VMware/HyperV and for any level of licensing), you put into place a very sophisticated data collection and analysis capability. Internal to the appliance is an integrated database that records performance data from across your virtualized environment that is used later for right-sizing, trending and other analysis. Further, the appliance is ‘stateless’ – this means that all your settings and preferences are also stored within the database. This means that the database is important (and becomes more so over time). For that reason alone, it is much better to ‘update’ the appliance rather than simply installing a newer version.
  2. We at VMTurbo are innovating and improving all aspects of our offerings as fast as we can. This means that newer appliances become available periodically – yes you want these.

Technical Note: Even the free Community Edition continues to record to the database (even though the more advanced functionality that can leverage this information is not available). If at any later time a higher level license is applied, that performance data can then be immediately leveraged.

I don’t have external internet access – can I upgrade offline?

Yes, please send an email to support@vmturbo.com and we will send you the instructions to do this. It is not very complicated at all.

How do I know if an update (newer, better functionality) is available?

  • Very easy: log in as 'administrator' and navigate to the ‘Admin’ tab.
  • Open the ‘Maintenance’ drawer.
  • Click on ‘Check’ in the ‘Software Updates’ box
  • If a newer version is available, you will see additional information regarding the build numbers etc.
  •  (The ‘Update’ box will un-gray).

How do I update the appliance?

  • Click on ‘Update’.
  • The rest is automated.
  • It takes a couple of minutes.
  • After that, refresh the browser view.

You will have full access to all functionality – except, all outstanding recommendations will temporarily disappear until the completion of the next full ‘market’ cycle (about 10 minutes).

Congratulations – your appliance is updated!

Do I need to do anything when changing license levels?

No, once your new license is applied (see the ‘Read Me First’ notes for instructions on how to do this), the appropriate level of functionality is immediately available.

What happens when my trial license expires?

At the conclusion of your trial period, the functionality level drops automatically to the free Community Edition. This is free, unlimited, un-restricted and yours to use. If you later purchase the Enterprise Operations Manager or Cloud Operations Manager, the application of the appropriate license immediately re-enables the appropriate functionality.

How do I extend my trial?

We love hearing from people that have been evaluating the benefits of VMTurbo.  Sometimes busy people simply don’t have enough time to fully explore all the capabilities and need a little bit more time! Not a problem, simply call us (781-373-3540) or send an email to licenserequest@vmturbo.com. We are happy to arrange that for you.
